Alliance formed with Government for Jobs of Tomorrow Scheme

The Association of Consulting Surveyors NSW (ASC NSW) has signed an agreement with the NSW Department of Industry to become a Jobs of Tomorrow Scholarships program industry partner.

This new program will award 25,000 Jobs of Tomorrow Scholarships over four years to students undertaking higher qualifications in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), which also includes surveying subjects.  Offered under the government’s Smart and Skilled program, eligible students are granted a $1000 scholarship to put towards higher study.

ACS NSW Chairman, Craig Turner, is enthusiastic about this new scholarship scheme as it will entice young people in the surveying industry to get involved in further higher study.

“As an industry partner in this program, we will be actively promoting these scholarships to the surveying profession. They provide a fantastic opportunity for those already in the surveying industry to further their job prospects and create a pathway to university.” said Mr Turner.

“We are very focussed on enticing young surveyors to undertake and complete higher studies, in order to create more qualified surveyors for the future. NSW is currently experiencing a shortage of registered surveyors, with the busy construction industry relying heavily on a pool of these qualified professionals.

Research indicates that this shortage will worsen in future years, so it’s critical that we act now to increase the number of qualified surveyors in NSW. These scholarships will definitely help.”

ACS NSW is also committed to providing mentoring opportunities and support to any students under this scholarship scheme. Relevant work experience is critical for their studies, so the Association will also assist to find work experience placements for these students.

The Jobs of Tomorrow Scholarship fund was announced by Premier Mike Baird In March 2015 as part of a pre-election commitment to create 150,000 new jobs in NSW.  The aim was to encourage more vocational education and training students to undertake qualifications in technology-based growth industries.  Nearly 70 qualifications at Certificate IV and above are eligible for Jobs of Tomorrow, including a Certificate IV in Surveying and Diploma of Surveying.
